When you hear that a blog, like Copyblogger, makes more than $12 million a year (according to Forbes), it begs the question “how do bloggers make money”?
It’s a question that also gets supplemented with the following;
- How to make money blogging?
- Types of blogs that make money?
- Can you really make money blogging?
Furthermore, once you know how to make money blogging, it begs the question as to how successful you’ll be.
For instance, there are plenty of bloggers who earn in excess of $100,000 per month, but there are many more who struggle to earn just $10 per month.
Let’s take a look at the reasons why some bloggers are killing it whilst others are struggling to make a few bucks.
How Do Bloggers Make Money?
5 Criteria…
- A Strong Niche – Your blog stands to make little money if it’s in either an unpopular niche or one that’s too competitive, so niche research is vital.
- Excellent Writing Skills – If you can’t write interesting, compelling copy you’ll struggle for growth & profits.
- Hard Working – Blogging in itself is no guarantee of success & neither is hard work, but without hard work, energy & enthusiasm, it’ll amount to nothing.
- Traffic – Maximise your best traffic source whether it’s organic, PPC or social marketing.
- eMail List – Growing your eMail-list (with an effective Autoresponder) is an essential component of a money making blog.
10 Things I Know About Making Money Blogging
1. It Is Possible To Make Money Blogging
Since I started blogging a number of years ago, I’ve always earned some amount (no matter how little) from my blogs every month.
However, recently I was making the most money I’ve ever made from my blogging efforts, but I’m certainly not (yet) in the same league as the super bloggers out there.
Whilst it’s definitely possible for anyone to make money from their blog, it’s not guaranteed that every blogger will be successful as their are many factors involved.
2. There Is No Secret Niche
There’s no secret money making niche to base your blog on.
Your blog could be on anything from photography to pet care to healthy recipes, which are all niches that bloggers make money from.
It’s beneficial for your chosen niche to be based on your hobby, profession or a topic that you are knowledgeable & passionate about.
This will keep you committed to posting awesome content that your audience will keep on coming back for.
Lastly, ensure that your chosen niche has sufficient demand & interest otherwise no matter how much you put into your blog, it’s unlikely to make money.
3. There Are Bloggers Who Make $100,000 a Month
Most of these bloggers started at zero and, as you can see, now earn mega bucks every month.

4. How Much Bloggers Make
Despite the amazing amounts of money that some bloggers make, it’s not surprising that most bloggers do not earn enough to do it on a full time basis.
Although, having said that, my guess is that there are many bloggers who are currently making some money but could earn much more if they committed to doing it full time.
However, blogging isn’t for everyone so don’t give up your day jobs to start doing it full time before generating a steady income flow from a strong niche.
Interestingly, a survey conducted by Darren Rowse (ProBlogger) revealed that;
- 10% of bloggers earn $0
- 25% earned between $1 to $99
- 4% earned more than $10,000
5. Blogging Takes a Lot Of Work
Whilst blogging demands a significant amount of effort & persistence, there’s no guarantee of success.
At times when I’ve expected earth shattering results from some of the works of art that I’ve posted, they’ve sadly barely caused a ripple of excitement.
On the other hand some of the mediocre stuff I’ve put out there has gone viral and earned me loads of money.
One thing I do know though, is that if you provide original, interesting, evergreen content that matches your target audience’s needs, you will get traction.
Once that happens, and assuming you blog’s monetized optimally, you’ll see the money rolling in before long.
3 Ways That Bloggers Make Money From Blogging
These are the most popular methods that bloggers use to get money paid directly to them as a result of people visiting their blogs.
- Advertising Revenue – I use Google’s Adsense program to great effect in providing a reliable income stream from my blogs. It’s really easy to set up and only requires your visitors to click on ads that appeal to them.
- Your Own Products & Services – What better way for bloggers to make money blogging than by marketing & selling their own products or services on their blogs.
- Affiliate Marketing – this is the big one which most bloggers use to generate megabucks with & can be really rewarding for the small guys too.
Conclusion On How Bloggers Make Money
From the above it’s clear that blogging offers a massive opportunity to earn a full time or part living.
On the other hand, it’s not clear that your particular blog will be successful.
One of the best things about making money from blogging is that you can give it a go without risking anything by starting your own blog for free, posting some awesome content, monetizing it and seeing if it delivers.
So why not try it in your own time, without risking your day job or investing anything in your blog, and if it doesn’t work out you haven’t lost anything.
